Behind his genial character, Rouse has real dedication to the special role of community colleges. “We aim to share an educational program with more people, and at a higher level,” Reichard says. “Given the right support, anyone can learn.”
Providing that support is Rouse’s vision. Students need more than traditional instruction, and Rouse expects the college to help them cultivate adaptability, too. No single track can prepare a student for a lifetime. People should feel confident enough to change jobs, and grow wherever they land. Manufacturing, the service sector, health care, construction, and information technology are among the fields with complex, and diversifying, requirements. In the same way that cable and fiber optics became large growth sectors, developments in these key industries will lead the way to changes. At PCC, students will have the skills and knowledge to shift with industry.
New buildings, programs, and partnerships mean the college will continue to innovate the way it delivers education, training, and instruction to students. Its diverse programs enable students to prepare for a career, while also taking courses for more advanced degrees. For students wishing to get a four-year degree, the college provides transferrable credits.
High school students benefit from the Early College High School, in its third year, and its first in its own building on campus. “They are treated just as any other student on our college campus,” Rouse says. This program allows high schoolers to take college-level courses. The Career and College Promise program also supports high schoolers with up to 30 hours of college credit, or classes toward a diploma, degree, or certificate so they are ready for an entry-level job in their chosen career.
Rouse and his wife, Janie, have two children, Lee Rouse and Whitney Rouse. He was the North Carolina Community College System’s President of the Year in 2016. The state’s sixth-largest community college, PCC serves more than 23,000 students every year.
