Pitt County had a total population of 146,000 in 2006 and the population estimated for Pitt County in 2007 was 152,068. Pitt County comprises one of the fastest growing centers in the state and the population increased by 23.3% between 1990 (108,480) and 2000 (133,798). Greenville is the largest city in Pitt County with a population of 76,058 and is the home of Pitt County Memorial Hospital and East Carolina University.
Greenville has played a huge role in the growth and development of the Pitt County Area. According to data recently released by the U.S. Census Bureau, Greenville is now the 10th largest city in North Carolina with a population of 76,058 and is the fifth fastest growing city in North Carolina this year. In 2008 Magazine ranked Greenville #8 for Best Small Places for Business and Careers. Greenville has also found itself on the list of Best Places to Live in 2006, 2007 and 2008 as well as being named the Sportstown USA city in North Carolina by magazine in 2004. Americas Promise Alliance, the nations largest alliance dedicated to children and youth, in partnership with Capital One, chose Pitt County as a winner in the 2008 competition as well.
According to population projections by the U.S. Census, the population of Pitt County is expected to reach 156,531 by July, 2010. Pitt County is rapidly growing and now ranks as the 13th most populous county in North Carolina. The Greenville Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), which encompasses all of Pitt County and Greene County, was the fourth fastest growing MSA in NC during the 1990's.
The ethnic distribution of the residents of Pitt County indicated that the largest racial groups are White and African-American, 62 percent was White and 34 percent was Black or African-American. Hispanics comprised 4 percent of the population in Pitt County, with 59 percent of the people in Pitt County being White non-Hispanic. 1 percent of the population was Asian and less than 0.5 percent was Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander and 2 percent reported 2 or more races.
In 2006, according to the American Community Survey, 2006, 28 percent of Pitt County residents were ages 25-44, with the median age being 32.2 years. 24 percent of the population was under 18 and 10 percent of the population was over 65. 76,000 (52 percent) of the population in 2006 were female and 70,000 (48 percent) were male.
